I know that some users like to promote their submissions, and on some levels I suppose it is fine, but there are a few instances that just seem to be getting too far into this cycle.
There are cases of users going to numerous profiles of others to advertise their submissions. Some are even going to the submissions of other users to solicit their entries. I have not received one, but I also would not be surprised if messages containing advertisements were sent out to a few users. Topics have also been created in the forums to advertise submissions.
Is it really necessary to do all of that? To me, it just seems like the submission should speak for itself and let things take their own course. Isn't it supposed to be about the submission itself? Does one really have to work more at advertising it than focusing on the finished entry itself as it is without all the glam and inclusions to talk it up?
I understand that it really isn't possible to remove all of this advertising, and some mild actions I don't think really need to be stopped anyway. But isn't there a way to contain some of this? Is there a rule or something that could be done so that the advertising be kept to one's profile and signature instead of soliciting to other submissions and creating topics in the forums?
I don't know about anyone else, but I can say that I am not the biggest fan of others advertising their submissions on my own entry. And seeing a number of topics popping up in the forums about how others should check this submission out or that one also seems to get old rather fast.
Anyone else been noticing some of these things or have any thoughts about the matter?

I seen these a lot as well. I mean yes they want other people to look at their work. And posting it on others submissions is a little too far.

I'll admit that some advertising is being taken too far, and that's not okay. But on the other hand, some of these users [not all though] are just desperate for some critics and some likes on their entries. I think that asking people to see your entry in your status is fine, or asking a few people to check it out is okay too. It's just a polite way of getting the word out; you can ignore it if you want to. But if they're going to extremes such as mass messaging, creating forums all about it, or advertising on other's submissions, then something needs to be done. Long story short, I think that unless a user is being obsessive about it, it isn't much of a problem. I completely understand your viewpoint anriya; it seems like some people just didn't get the memo XD

Things like adding it to your profile, status, or signature are alright with me. I personally am not into it, but I don't have a problem seeing other users doing it. But I just find it rude to try and advertise one's own submission on something someone else did and worked for. And for the topics I would just rather not see the forums get flooded when a person can simply post it in their status and whatnot instead.

well, I've done this a lot, and others have done it toward me, but I am not fazed by these acts. After all, don't all of us want to share our ideas to the public? And more importantly the judges themselves. Although I've got to admit that ratings and views are not always the way to go and win something (I would know, FIRSTHAND) so let these people share their ideas, and we may do the same.

Sharing to the public is one thing, but going to submissions and profiles is starting to cross the line to me. I don't create submissions for others to advertise and solicit in nor do I make a profile for users to fill up with such activities either. I have them for feedback and conversations among friends and other users of the site, not spam city, and I don't appreciate such solicitations on what I work at.

If someone is spamming your profile and comment section and you don't want them to do so, you can flag it for a moderator to look at. I believe you can also simply delete any comment on your own profile that you don't like.

Yes, it just doesn't seem like good etiquette to be dropping "adverts" for one's own submissions on others' profiles and other entries.
The system of the site is geared to give everybody equal opportunity for their submissions to be seen.
The thumbnail, title and summary really should be enough for any submission to stand on its own. And no, that doesn't mean put everything in ALL CAPS either, just to make it stand out more. Just be creative.
Also, there is already a thread or two somewhere in the forums specifically for promoting your own videos. Something like that's fine, because they're not focused on one person's entries, and anybody can post in them. As long as it's communal, it's fine by me.
But we don't need to be bombarded with random acts of advertisement on our individual profiles, entries, and inboxes every time someone posts a new entry. We know where to look if we want to browse through new entries; we'll find them well enough on our own...

I know! someone can create an advertise thread in the Feedback area! that way, people can get their subs known while they too can check other people's subs out.

Okay, strike what I said about not getting messages on advertising before, because I am being flooded with them now. I don't have a problem with CONSERVATIVE advertising like in one's own profile, but I seriously do not think it is necessary to send a bunch of messages here. As soon as I delete one and remove myself from it, I wind up getting another just minutes later. I think this is getting a bit out of hand and I know a few others are also really becoming tired of this too from what I've been hearing.
