$40 completely gone :[

I was eating out with a friend last year right before the holidays. She wanted to go to this Mexican food place that she loved so I ended paying for $10 worth of food out of the $50 I was given a few days before for doing good on my report card. The food wasn't that great though but I was being polite and trying it since my friend adored this place. I took all the money with me that night hoping to get some presents for people since Christmas was in less than a month. After we ate, we walked around town and went into shops. I was about to buy something when I realized the remaining $40 I had was gone. I panicked. We walked all around town, into every place we had been to that night but I could not find it. Lastly, we went to the Mexican food place where they were closing for the night. I could see the staff peeping out of the kitchen, giggling at me as I talked to the manager seeing if they had found $40. I pretty much figured that anyone who found it was going to keep it rather than turn it in. I have a feeling though that the staff in the back that was laughing at me probably had it. It really irked me but there was not much I could do.
